"1 + 1 = 3! That’s because when both eyes work together properly, the result isn’t just two working eyes - it’s a fully functional, integrated three-dimensional system! "
- Frank Filocamo -
Frank Filocamo’s journey into optometry began with a childhood eye injury that sparked his fascination with how the eye works. His natural curiosity, combined with a love for science, led him to pursue a career in optometry—one that has now spanned over 40 years. Today, he continues to provide care for generations of patients, from those he first saw as young children to their own kids—and in some cases, even their grandchildren.
Discovering Behavioural Optometry: A Turning Point
Early in his career, Frank noticed a troubling pattern—parents were coming to him with concerns that their bright, capable children were struggling in school. These kids were often labeled as ‘clumsy,’ ‘distracted,’ or ‘unmotivated’, when in reality, the issue wasn’t intelligence—it was vision. Traditional optometric testing wasn’t giving them the help they needed.
Determined to find a better solution, Frank delved into behavioural optometry, attending lectures. He quickly saw that 80% of classroom learning happens through the visual system, and many children with reading or coordination difficulties were simply lacking the necessary visual skills to support their learning. Seeing remarkable improvements in his young patients through this approach, he pursued further studies, ultimately earning his Fellowships in Behavioural Optometry in both Australia and the USA.
Today, Frank doesn’t just assess whether a child can see an eye chart—he evaluates their visual processing, tracking, eye-hand coordination, and visual perception, ensuring they have the foundational visual skills needed to learn effectively. His expertise extends beyond children, helping patients of all ages overcome vision-related challenges that impact their daily lives.
